In 2020,&nbsp;Covid19&nbsp;forced many SMEs to shut down. Their business model did not fit this new situation, which is treatening the viability of SMEs worldwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SMEs play an important role for most countries<\/strong>: They account for 60% employment and 50%-60% in value added across OECD countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VUkBqePQRLw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, many SMEs experienced&nbsp;<strong>strong declines in revenue<\/strong>. Many of them don&#8217;t have the reserves to survive under these conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore,<strong> policy makers responded&nbsp;<\/strong>by the establishment of different measures to save SMEs: Deferring payments, enhancing access to credit or providing grants and wage subsidies. <strong>Still, many SMEs are fighting to survive the crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which actions can small and medium-sized businesses take to ensure viability?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It needs&nbsp;<strong>sustainable actions&nbsp;<\/strong>to strenghten the resilience of a small or medium-sized business. This means adopting new technologies and work practices:&nbsp;<strong>Digitization, digitalisation and digital transformation<\/strong>&nbsp;are buzzwords, which are often used in this context.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It needs in-depth knowledge about digital concepts:&nbsp;<em>&#8220;If business leaders think they can digitize a business or digitalize a process to digitally transform they are misunderstanding the terms and missing out opportunities to evolve, gain competitive advantage, respond to consumer and employee expectations and demands, and become agile businesses.&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@colleenchapco\/digitization-digitalization-and-digital-transformation-whats-the-difference-eff1d002fbdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colleen Chapco-Wade, 2018<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/DigiCulTSLogo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/DigiCulTSLogo.png\" alt=\"DigiCulTS Logo\" class=\"wp-image-1713\" width=\"307\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/DigiCulTSLogo.png 730w, https:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/DigiCulTSLogo-300x109.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To support SMEs not to miss out business opportunities and to stay competitive, the team of the <a href=\"http:\/\/digicults.eu\">ErasmusPlus project DigiCulTS<\/a>, currently develops an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/index.php\/2020\/06\/30\/writing-personas-for-curriculum-and-course-design\/\">online course <\/a>and online resources to enable SMEs to find their individual approach to <strong>digitization, digitalization and digital transformation<\/strong>. The project team creates three core modules and more than 5 industry-specific modules. This is a <strong>sneak peek<\/strong> of the content and online activities, which we are currently developing for our course, which will be <strong>officially launched in April 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Difference between digitization, digitalizaton and digital transformation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@colleenchapco\/digitization-digitalization-and-digital-transformation-whats-the-difference-eff1d002fbdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colleen Chapco-Wade (2018<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jasonbloomberg\/2018\/04\/29\/digitization-digitalization-and-digital-transformation-confuse-them-at-your-peril\/\">Bloomberg (2018) <\/a>wrote brief articles about the differentiation between the three buzzwords. A quick summary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Digitization:&nbsp;<\/strong>Transitioning from analog to digital<\/li><li><strong>Digitalization:&nbsp;<\/strong>Making digitized information work for you<\/li><li><strong>Digital Transformation:&nbsp;<\/strong>Developing innovative, customer-centred business models that integrate all this digitized data and digitalized applications.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Stopping at the transition from analog to digital (e.g. from paper-based letters to eMails) is not an option for SMEs nowadays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital transformation it is!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital maturity is critical to organizational success. It is not enough just to digitize single processes without understanding the&nbsp;<strong>broader perspective of digital technology and cultural change<\/strong>. Digital transformation is about about people, not so much about digital technology:&nbsp;<em>What needs do people have? How do they respond to technology? What are their expectations? How do they communicate online and what are their current habits?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>video below<\/strong>&nbsp;is about a desperate situation of the&nbsp;<strong>SME owner Joseph<\/strong>, which finally turns into a big success due to Joseph&#8217;s agile way to respond to his customer&#8217;s needs and reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-container\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/maKZ24qq-Ec?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of an app,<strong>&nbsp;digitization and digitalization of processes is<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>not enough to be successful<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph used technology to&nbsp;<strong>increase convenience<\/strong>&nbsp;for his customers. He did that by understandig trends,&nbsp;<strong>listening to complains and feedback of customers<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This made his company resilient.
