For the <a href=\"https:\/\/autumn2023seminar.eucen.eu\/programme\/\">eucen Autumn Seminar 2023<\/a>, my colleague Alexandra G\u00f6ssl and I designed a workshop to gain awareness and reflect on current actions in European Higher Education institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diversity Challenges Unnoticed in Academia.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the conference program there was a presentation by Emmanuel Acquah titled \u201cUnderrepresentation of minority groups in higher education \u2013 is it an oversight or deliberate oversight?\u201d and I immediately felt reminded of \u201cprofessional noticing\u201d, an approach that I am currently focusing on in my research, especially in the <a href=\"https:\/\/professionalnoticing.eu\/\">EU project \u201cPROMISE\u201d<\/a>. There are reasons, why we don\u2019t notice. Literature on \u201cprofessional noticing\u201d (Mason 2002, Rooney &amp; Boud 2019) suggests that there are 3 main reasons, why people don\u2019t notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are not educated on a certain topic, therefore they are not &#8220;trained&#8221; to notice certain patterns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are not in the right headspace to notice. They are not attentive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They simply don&#8217;t want to learn or understand. (E.g. to minimize cognitive dissonance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Noticing is a prerequisite for taking action.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the kick-off of the <a href=\"https:\/\/professionalnoticing.eu\/\">PROMISE project<\/a> at the beginning of this year in Krems, I wondered how I could visualize \u201cprofessional noticing\u201d. After semi-systematic literature research, interviews with experts and stakeholders, and a workshop with lecturers, entrepreneurs, instructional designers, and an incubator coach, I came up with several versions of my visualization. Diversity challenges are often not noticed and therefore, there are still actions missing or not suitable for the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good practices still exist.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, there are some good practices out there regarding diversity challenges. In our workshop, we wanted to unveil which solutions are already actively practiced in Higher Education in Europe and beyond. We talked a lot about theoretical concepts and challenges in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. There were excellent talks and panel discussions. In our design, we now wanted to <strong>shift to focus on what already works.<\/strong> We are aware that the diversity challenges might differ from country to country, but still <strong>collecting practices makes sense to see what is similar and what could be an inspiration for future actions in one\u2019s environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"449\" src=\"http:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1.png 738w, https:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1-300x183.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>We randomly divided the conference cohort into 4 groups with different topics:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethnic Minorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LGBTQ+<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"722\" height=\"743\" src=\"http:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2.png 722w, https:\/\/www.isabellgru.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-2-292x300.png 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Afterwards, participants should reflect, on if they<strong> can remember <\/strong>any actions toward challenges in the assigned topic of their group. If they cannot remember anything, they were <strong>asked to look it up online<\/strong>. As a next step, participants talked about their findings: <strong>What is similar, what is different? Could they cluster their findings into categories?<\/strong> What are the lessons learned?
