Which ways of applications are there in educational settings?<\/p>\n<h2>Big Data in Education &#8211; Learning Analytics<\/h2>\n<p>As teaching and learning are not only happening offline but also online, and learning management systems are becoming more and more popular, also more data is collected accordingly. This data could be used to facilitate the learning process, but first it needs analysis. A process of data mining is required and in the educational sphere it is often referred to as &#8220;learning analytics&#8221; or &#8220;educational data mining&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"de\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What is learning analytics? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ats2020?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ats2020<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ats2020project?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ats2020project<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/H2_Learning?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@H2_Learning<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anastasiaeco?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@anastasiaeco<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GoStressbusterz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GoStressbusterz<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndreaGhoneim?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AndreaGhoneim<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IsabellGru?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@IsabellGru<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ErRU9PrDuS\">pic.twitter.com\/ErRU9PrDuS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 jct.ie (@JCforTeachers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JCforTeachers\/status\/841596658836226048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">14. M\u00e4rz 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In March 2017, I participated at a partner meeting of the ATS2020 project in Zagreb, which was, among other important issues, also focusing on learning analytics.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/jrc\/en\/person\/riina-vuorikari\">Riina Vuorikari,<\/a>\u00a0researcher and part of the Information Society Unit of the European Commission\u2019s in-house science service JRC-IPTS, presented the report on &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/jrc\/en\/publication\/eur-scientific-and-technical-research-reports\/research-evidence-use-learning-analytics-implications-education-policy\">Research Evidence on the Use of Learning Analytics&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Riina underlined, that learning analytics are\u00a0<strong>supplier-driven <\/strong>at the moment. For developing a useful learning analytics application for education, it is necessary to consider the demand of teachers and learners. Riina presented what kind of learning analytics solutions are applied in education in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>There is still\u00a0<strong>little evidence<\/strong>\u00a0about the impact of learning analytics on the learning process. It needs\u00a0<strong>actionable data<\/strong>, which is not only descriptive, but also gives suggestions to improve the individual learning pathway. At this point it is also worthwhile to mention, that learning analytics have great potential for\u00a0<strong>individualized learning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Learning Analytics?<\/h2>\n<p>In the end, it is important to\u00a0<strong>enable students to understand their own learning statistics and<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>reflect on it. <\/strong>They should be able to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>use their learning analytics to be more aware about their learning pathways and how to improve them. This is a part of\u00a0<strong>digital competence.<\/strong>\u00a0It is not enough that the learning management system is taking over all these task of giving\u00a0<strong>meaning to the learning analytics data<\/strong>. The learner needs a\u00a0<strong>critical mind<\/strong>\u00a0and it is the teacher\u2019s duty to provide advice and help the students to develop it.<\/p>\n<p>During the ATS2020 partner meeting it was agreed that<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openbadges.org\/\">badges<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0could be a way to visualize learning analytics, especially for early learners. It needs time to develop the competence to make sense out of data, to understand data visualizations and to interpret them in terms of one&#8217;s own learning pathway. This is an aspect, teachers need to keep in mind, not only for facilitating the development of the learners&#8217; meta-cognitive competences, but also to get them acquainted with the world of big data and data mining in general.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about learning analytics in education?
